When we first married it wasn't long before I fell pregnant with our eldest daughter. When she was one year old I got clucky but thinking that it was too soon to have another baby we bought a dog instead! I wish I could tell you that the dog was a good idea but I can't. She was a blue healer cross and she drove me crazy! She would jump up at the washing line and pull all my freshly laundered clothes down. She chewed everything! all of our shoes became victims of the Blue Healer bite. I read somewhere that having two dogs could settle a bad dog down (who wrote that.........let me at him) so believing everything that I am told we started hunting for another dog. This time we bought a small dog, a Dachshund cross! We called her Esther (after my favourite Bible Story) and she was the most placid dog we could have hoped for. Sadly she didn't have any impact on the Blue Healer! all it did was emphasize her bad behaviour. Eventually we gave the Blue Healer to someone who could provide her with a bit more land to run around on, which left us with one good dog. Esther was a real family pet. She thought she was human! we all loved her. It was a sad day when at 10 years old she became so sick that we were advised to have her put down. That was 10 years ago and we haven't owned a dog since..............
Suddenly, out of the blue, I am thinking about another dog. Steve thinks that I am being silly and it is just because I know that I can't have any more babies. I don't know, maybe that is true! But I have spent hours on the internet checking out Dog breeds. One minute I want a Golden Retriever but then I hear that they love to chew furniture............um, not a good idea. Then I want a Pug, just like the one that Don Burke had on his show, "Burkes Backyard". Then I read that they can have breathing problems. So I go through the list, poodles, Labradors, Beagles, West Highland Terriers, Old English Sheepdog.............and then I find the perfect dog for me....a Cavoodle! a King Charles Cavalier Spaniel cross Miniature Poodle. Apparently they have the beautiful nature of a King Charles without the health issues and the best bit of all.............they hardly molt because of the poodle cross. I want one, I want one, I want one. I even have a name picked out. But............and this is a big BUT...my husband says "NO". Under no circumstances is he going to buy a dog because he thinks that after five minutes my interest will wane and he will do all the walking, picking up dog muck, cleaning etc etc etc.
So what does a girl do in this situation? well, I will sulk of course................

I confess! I am a dog lover... not just any dog, but the kinda dog that is sweet, lovable and kind-faced. They have those eyese that you know they wouldn't hurt a flea.
I had a dog growing up, but never wanted another one after she departed for doggy heaven. Finally, 2 and a half years ago, I had the impulsive urge to get a dog. My husband said no (for the same reasons as yours), and I sulked. lol, I know, I'm naughty! And I won ~ enter Darcy the Labrador.
They are the BEST dogs ever! He is our baby, but he is such a good watch-dog. Even though he wouldn't bite anyone, his bark would scare anyone off!
I do hope you both reach the decision that is best for your family because they are a big commitment. I am glad we have Darcy, but he does limit our life somewhat. ie, Im ready to live in a unit (with only 1 child now at home), and we can't because we have a dog. Going away for a weekend is hard also, unless you have someone you can trust to come feed it. But, the blessings outweight many negetives...
The breed is very important, so it is good you are weighing it all up.
Labs drop lots of fur, which I never knew, and I sweep our floor more times than I care to admit because of it ;)

We love dogs in our household and last week we went for a trip up the coast to stock up on shopping and we came back with a 9 week old border collie x Kalpie. He was very sick and I nursed him through the night and day not sure if he was going to make it, but now 4 days later he is bouncing around and is as cute as ever. Start praying...lol!

Oh ladies, I thought you were going to convince me NOT to buy a dog! now I want one even more. My husband has hopes of traveling a bit more in the future and I must admit that having a dog will probably hinder that. Although we do have two married daughters that live nearby! dog sitters maybe?

I'll confess, I am a dog lover. I would always have a dog, if it were my decision. I often tell my say that if John departs thi searth before I do, I *will* have a dog. Everyone knows it.
however, we don't have a dog currently, and won't again due to my husband's wishes. Why? Is it because he hates dogs? Nope, not at all! Quite the opposite. He loves dogs. But he can't live with them inside the home...he can't live with them like others do so he thinks it is cruel. He'd rather spare the dog than subject it to living in cooped up yards with little attention.
So my dear friend, as one who truly loves animals but loves her husband more - don't do it!
If it is DH's beliefs, thoughts or wishes then abide by them respectfully and cheerfully as unto the Lord.
It's just not worth doing otherwise. :)
Hey, maybe your adult kids will have dogs and you can visit them, cuddle and play with the dogs and then leave them to go home again! LOL

My husband is winning at the moment. I have stopped sulking today as it is too hard. I might start again tomorrow!

The funny thing with our situation is that my dh didn't want a dog. Reason being, he knew how much commitment was required, and he is the sort of man that once he has made a commitment to the animal, he will stick by it through thick and thin...
So, once he saw the light, he gave way to those suppressed inner desires and let us adopt our baby, lol. And, I reassured him it would be kept outside etc etc.
When we got Darcy, he would cry at night (as they do), and my husband couldn't bear it. He wouldn't let me keep the dog outside. No, he wanted it inside. Get this: right next to his side of the bed! Oh pleeeeaaaase! Not only that, we cannot tease the dog, or go cross on him... David tells us to stop in case we scar him. He says it jokingly, but he can't fool me lol. David calls Darcy his best friend. I mean, they are so close it's not funny. I love Boy (as we call him), but to see my husband, who resisted getting a dog, is such a laugh. He walks him every day, and loves the fact that having a dog encourages that - it keeps him fitter.
So, whilst my dh didn't want a dog, he is now the one most attached to him (although we all love him and he is one spoilt pooch).
But if you dh is dead against it, well, obviously it is not gonna happen and you may as well just enjoy oogling my boy on my blog, lol.

Thanks Amanda, I know that my husband's fear stems from having to take our dog to be put down. It really upset him. It was also a time in our life where we had a young, growing family, and the dog came last. We still have a young family but also lots of older children who would love a dog. I know that it is a big responsibility but I am prepared to take that on. I think it is good for children to grow up with a dog.

Yes, I so too... my children always wanted a dog, and in some ways I wished I had gotten a dog when my kids were slightly young.
I forgot to say in my previous comments, that ever since my first marriage broke up (years ago), I have only ever rented... which was my stumbling block. Not all landlords want a dog in their house, and I didn't ever want to miss out on a place because of it. But, so far, so good.
You don't have that to consider, so that is a blessing.
